Hello everyone:

Has anyone noticed the clothing of high school students these days, other than me?  I was driving past my local high school yesterday, when I saw some young girls running down the street. They were wearing shorty shorts and sports bras. And no shirts. Heavenly days! Where is modesty?

When I was in high school, boys had to wear collared shirts (golf shirts were fine but dress shirts with buttoned down collars were better) and dress slacks. Girls had to wear collared shirts and skirts that were no more than two inches above their knees (The length was measured when they were kneeling on the floor. Teachers randomly measured the skirt heights, and we never knew what days they would choose). We were also allowed to wear dresses, which were also subject to being measured.

My junior year of high school, girls were allowed to wear pants, but this was not allowed until wintertime. (I grew up in Florida, so wintertime was a fluid idea.) In my senior year, we were finally allowed to wear jeans.  To celebrate, I bought some bell bottom jeans that had brown, gold, and beige stripes. Boy, was I the cat’s meow. (Please note that brown, gold, and beige are not my best colors. I’m a purple or fuchsia person, never brown.)

Do you remember the female soccer player a few years ago who was so excited about her team’s win that she ripped off her T-shirt? She got a lot of negative press for standing there in her sports bra. It is now apparently a fashion statement. As my sons would say, sheesh.

So, back to my original question: Where is modesty? I would add: Where do we go from here?

Best,

Dr. Sheri
